We have done all hikes personally and collected all data personally! Our assessments and evaluative statements were made on the basis of the road and weather conditions prevailing on the day of our hike, as well as our physical condition at the time. They are therefore indications, which are to be checked and judged again before our own hike. To further objectify our statements, we would be grateful for an evaluation of the hike (3rd Evaluation Rating) and for comments on the hike (7th Comments Reviews)! Please be sure to read the comments under “7. Comments Reviews” as they often describe important changes (e.g. new road closures, signs no longer present, trail washed away, …) that have occurred over time and are thus important or possibly crucial to your hike. We are very careful, but not error-free and ask, if you discover or suspect errors, to contact us – thank you very much!

5.1 Location
West Butte and The Slot are located northwest of Brawley and El Centro, southeast of Borrego Springs and east of the Salton Sea in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.
5.2 Directions | Getting there
From Borrego Springs, drive southeast on Borrego Springs Road to CA 78. Take CA 78 to the left and follow the road 1.5 miles to Butte Pass Road, which is unpaved off to the left (see above for GPS coordinates). Butte Pass Road is generally passable by passenger car. Follow the dirt road 1.79 miles to the parking area and trailhead (see above for GPS coordinates).
5.3 Hike | Hike
To the right of the Wash, take the ridge that leads almost straight up to the rocks. After 0.8 miles you have reached the sharp and rough lava rocks. The terrain becomes steeper and after a mile you reach a pass that gives you a view of the eastern side. In the distance, the Salton Sea is visible in deep blue. After the pass, head cross-country up to the left. Once at an intermediate high point, go right and skirt a fore peak on the left. And then it’s just a short walk to the highest point on West Butte. After 1.3 miles, you’ll be at the top. Here at 1,204 feet, a small “City of Rocks” spreads out. The dark brown lava rocks stand in a row and offer excellent opportunities to take a short break. It’s worth it, because the 360-degree panoramic view is massive and beautiful. The small volcanic remnant is located in the flat desert and therefore towers over all visual protection. We continue along the ridge to the north. Some peaks have to be passed and generously bypassed. When you arrive at a small high valley that forms the beginning of a wash, you are at the northwest precipice. It’s a fairly steep descent. You take your bearings from the wash, but that’s not all. The lava scree and rocks are criss-crossed, – a trail is still not recognizable! And so it is very laborious in the steep terrain to find an optimal and passable way. There are always variations to be decided and walked without losing the rough direction. Almost at the bottom, orient yourself to a rock wall on the right and go directly in the wash. Many boulders and sticks that must be avoided make progress difficult. When you finally find yourself at the bottom, keep to the right and traverse wash after wash increasingly to the west. You finally reach the Borrego Mountain Wash. Tire tracks signal civilization after 4 miles and 3.5 hours. The main riverbed takes you south. At a junction you go straight, which is only a short detour, but leads to a nice little canyon. You climb through this canyon, but then go back. So now the other wide option. It leads to a parking lot, on the upper left side there are some nice rock gates on the trail, where the off-roaders get off and walk into “The Slot”. 0.5 miles after the parking lot the slot canyon begins, called The Slot. Closer and closer the canyon walls move together. The rocks are almost colorless, but the sun often casts a yellow light or two on the rock. The canyon now becomes so narrow that people have to wait to let oncoming traffic pass. Below the trailhead and parking lot, the canyon ends. You are back at the car after 6.5 miles and after about 4.5 to 5 hours. This was beautiful, but also unexpectedly exhausting.

01 — Intro
The desert highlight between San Diego and Palm Springs: Anza Borrego Desert State Park
Welcome to California’s largest state park: nearly 250,000 acres of wasteland, palm oases and cactus-covered mountains await you at Anza Borrego Desert State Park. In this wild and remote place, visitors witness geological evolution as erosion and flash floods still permanently alter the landscape. Much of it is only accessible by simple roads or can be explored on foot. If you are looking for absolute silence and unforgettable nature, you will find it here. That’s a promise! 02 — Borrego Springs
Borrego Springs is the center of Anza Borrego Desert State Park.
Right in the middle of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the modest town of Borrego Springs with a population of only 3,500. So there’s a lot going on here, but if you’re looking for action, this isn’t the place to be anyway. The fastest way into nature is from Palm Canyon Drive to the north. After a short drive over dusty roads, you’ll find yourself in the middle of the California desert, enjoying the complete peace and quiet. You can experience the desert even more intensively on the approximately 85 hiking, running, and mountain biking trails including the 1.5-mile hike to Borrego Palm Canyon. Borrego Palm Canyon. The Visitor Center in the west of the town will give you all the details. 03 – Badlands
Head into the desert for the most beautiful panorama of the Anza Borrego: Welcome to the Borrego Badlands.
The wrinkled rock landscape of the Borrego Badlands is reminiscent of the great example in South Dakota, the Badlands National Park. While this maze of golden hills and sand-colored canyons is much smaller, it’s no less worth seeing. One of the best viewpoints of the Borrego Badlands is Font’s Pointwhich is also nicknamed the “Californian Grand Canyon”. This point is highly sought after by photographers – especially at sunset or on full moon nights. The way there is not quite easy, because it leads over unpaved sandy roads, for which in any case a four-wheel drive vehicle with ample ground clearance is necessary. For the almost 6 kilometers long route you need plenty of time, but at the end you will be rewarded with a great panorama. “Prehistoric animals and mythical creatures made of metal along the roads, created by sculptor Ricardo Breceda.” Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California – 33°15’53.6 “N 116°22’30.0 “W 04 – Stars
Paradise for stargazing – no light pollution in Anza Borrego
In addition to conservation, Borrego Springs residents are proud to be an official “International Dark Sky Community” committed to protecting the night sky from light pollution. The community has earned this distinction by keeping the lights on public streets, in front of businesses and even on private residences very dim. After all, gazing at the starry sky is another highlight that this stunning southern California town has to offer: In Anza Borrego Desert State Park, millions of stars can be perfectly observed after dark. 05 — Sculptures
Whimsical creatures in Anza Borrego State Park: The Riccardo Breceda Sculptures
And Anza Borrego Desert State Park has something else to offer: an art scene! art scene! North of Borrego Springs, wondrous creatures appear everywhere in the desert: prehistoric elephants, a saber-toothed cat, a prehistoric camel, a Tyrannosaurus rex and a giant bird of prey. They are not flesh and blood, however, but amazing works of art – sometimes quirky, sometimes weird, sometimes creepy. They were created by the sculptor Riccardo Brecedawho attracts visitors to the region with these sculptures. With success! While some of the creatures spring from a fertile imagination – like a snake over a hundred meters long that arcs across the salt flats – many of the sculptures depict creatures that actually once roamed this land. Around all 130 rust-colored sculptures made of scrap metal, get a detailed map at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center.
